Snow Day

Today was the perfect day to do what all dogs must do, if they can, and that is play in the snow! There are 6 dogs that run on this property, but many of the outdoor or active images just show four. That’s because two dogs – the biggest one (a 170+ pound Newfy) and the smallest one (a uhh, err, a slightly overweight robust maltese-terrier) are by far the oldest and they have been tasked to “guard” the house. Occasionally they have it in them to increase their activity level, but the next day…sometimes even the next hour, they pay the price with soreness that can last several days.
Today, the mutts ran the fence line trying to keep up with the neighbor boys snowmobiles – to absolutely no avail. After about 4-5 or maybe more runs (the fence is pretty long,) they -the dogs- began to poop out.
Two of the dogs (the smart one and the lazy easy going one) didn’t try too long or too hard…opting instead to check out animal tracks…
or attempt a more reasonable & attainable goal – which is coming when called:
and eventually finding their way to each other to play a little game of catch me if you can…
Soon thereafter, the fence-line dogs gave up completely and went to check out what the other two were doing on the north side of the chicken building…the chickens were none too pleased. They could hear us and we could certainly hear them.
A pristine snow day is never complete without the…
requisite christening.
By and by, the dogs made it to the southside of the property where they eventually found the animal thorough-fare…notice the carrot remnant in the background?
Then the old heavy newf managed to get to the southside and come check out what was going on…
but that didn’t stop the other newf from finding a comfy rest place and staying put.
Meanwhile, the boy spied the snowmobilers going home…
Which then alerted everyone, more or less…
Until it was time to head home…
And that my friends, is a somewhat typical morning walk with the mutts – shortened no doubt – not quite the full perimeter and certainly quite subdued for a snow day. It must have been all that snowmobile activity.

beautiful dogs
Thank you! Have a happy holiday!
wow amazing pictures, I would LOVE snow like that here! xx
Thank you! Happy holidays to you!!
Your dogs definitely look built for snow – you should remind them all that fur means they are supposed to love the cold!
Built for snow as in hairy AND heavy….Newfoundland’s are the dogs that rescue people who fall off boats and ships in the Atlantic….great stories of heroism. When on land, they lay. Kuvasz (the white dog) are bred to guard livestock completely independent of man. I’m not sure any of my dogs could be so impressive if given such dire circumstances, except for the baby Landseer who is way too smart for her own good. But it’s somewhere deep in their DNA….God bless them all, the fat, lazy lot of them! They are most comfortable in the cold though and tend to enjoy staying in it even when the temps are in the teens….by the way, 4 of the dogs are adult rescues….sad stories all of them.
Lovely snowy dog shots! It’s 39 Celsius in Melbourne today, so no snow here naturally.
Yes. You lovely folks down south are experiencing summer right now. Do you ever receive a bit of snow?
Great pics! We love the long growing season down here in the south, but there’s nothing quite like snow.
Thanks! This was the second day after the blizzardy snowstorm that hit the plains and Midwest. The day after the blizzard was way too cold with the blizzardy winds still howling!
